During this unprecedented time, Technology Association of Oregon will be featuring the benefits and value that TAO member companies can provide to our greater community in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Luke Renner, Director of Marketing at Manceps, explains how the company is volunteering its AI experts for coronavirus research and projects.

TAO Member Company: Manceps

Give us a short intro to your business:
Manceps, a Google partner, is an AI research and engineering firm based in Portland. The company brings Artificial Intelligence strategy and solutions to enterprise organizations, particularly those in healthcare.

What resources can your business offer the community during the COVID pandemic?:
Manceps is volunteering all of their AI experts and data scientists to help with COVID-19-related research initiatives. Although AI has many different use cases, the company outlined a few areas that they think they could make a meaningful impact —

  • Disease Research. Manceps can help you leverage machine learning and pattern recognition to learn more about the disease or accelerate research into finding a cure.
  • Predictive Modeling. Add complexity and feature engineering to disease models to predict future outbreaks and trends.
  • Diagnostics. Deploy image recognition to diagnose and prioritize patients more easily.
  • Crowd Fever Detection. Leverage pattern recognition to identify those with high fevers in large group settings like airports or sporting events.

What is the best way for the community to get in touch?:
Companies that would like to participate in the program can apply by visiting — https://manceps.com/pandemic.

What’s your favorite way to pass the time during self-quarantine?:
While in self-quarantine, I have split my time between working in my vegetable garden and writing. The forced stillness has been an excellent opportunity for me to create new poetry.

What’s one thing that helps you stay positive or gives you hope during difficult times?:
The majority of humans on this planet have chosen to stay home. I see it as a massive act of love — love for the elderly, for the immuno-compromised, for the healthcare professionals fighting this fight. It may well be the greatest act of global solidarity humankind has ever performed.
